Open Seminar and New Website Kicks off Centre on Global Migration (CGM)
On March 29 the inauguration of the Center on Global Migration (CGM) took place. It is an interdisciplinary center with the School of Global Studies as the host department. The aim of CGM is to gather all ongoing research within the university and also serve as a hub for interaction between business, public actors, civil society and the University of Gothenburg on matters related to migration and integration.
On the day an open seminar was held with Alice M Nah, from the University of York, as a keynote speaker. Researchers from all faculties at the University of Gothenburg participated and presented ongoing research project on migration. This shows how extensive the research on migration is within the university. CGM will play an important role in collecting ongoing research and seek external funding and program grants for future research collaborations.
Andrea Spehar, Director of CGM, kicked off the event together with Isabell Schierenbeck, Chair of CGM, and Helena Lindholm, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Gothenburg.
– While some research subjects have a micro perspective and focus on migrants as actors, others are more interested in the social structures and institutions that affect and are affected by migration. The new centre creates increased opportunities for collaborations across many of the University’s disciplinary boundaries,’ says Andrea Spehar.
The keynote speaker was followed by interesting panel discussions on global migration, including participants such as Anders Carlberg, Head of FoUU (VGR)and Malin Breitner, Regional Development Manager, Red Cross.
About Center on Global Migration (CGM)
CGM was established on 1 March, 2017, and the School of Global Studies acts as host department. CGM has a steering committee with representatives from all faculties at the University of Gothenburg.
Current external partners: City of Gothenburg, Region Västra Götaland, Swedish Migration Agency, Red Cross, Restad Support Group, the County Administrative Board, and FoUsam health equity in the northeast of Gothenburg. Additional external parties are expected to join the CGM.
